Overview: Henrik Ibsen's famous drama from 1886. As formulated by the protagonist Rosmer, the theme of the play is social and political change, which means that the traditional ruling classes renounce imposing their ideals on the rest of society. The play's immoral, or amoral, "free-thinking" heroine, Rebekka, sets out to undermine Rosmer's religious and political views because he is an influential person in society. Rebekka has not only renounced Christianity, but also its entire ethical system.
